Mobile Phones to Look Forward to in 2022

Whether you like to play at a casino online or you prefer to play regular video games, there’s absolutely no doubt that mobile phones have changed the way thousands of people play games all around the world.

New developments

So, what exciting developments can gamers look forward to in the mobile arena in 2022? We take a look at some of the mobile phones expected in the upcoming new year and what impact they could have on the mobile gaming space.

Samsung Galaxy S22

Samsung may not quite be the powerhouse brand it once was when it comes to mobile phones, but that doesn’t mean their team hasn’t quietly been putting together quality products and bold new devices in the mobile arena.

One such quality product range is the Samsung Galaxy phone, with the S22 likely to appear sometime early in 2022. This device will be more evolutionary than revolutionary, with upgrades to all the features that you’d expect from an annual refresh. Samsung news site, SamMobile.com, shared what they believe will be the specs of the S22 in their recently published article “Galaxy S22 Ultra name change isn’t happening, according to the latest rumour.” These specs include:

  • A new 6.8-inch Super AMOLED LTPO display with a 120 Hz refresh rate
  • Samsung’s new Exynos 2200 processor with an AMD RDNA2 GPU (the type of GPU you’d find in the latest PlayStation or Xbox, or Snapdragon 898 in specific markets
  • 12GB RAM
  • 256GB/512GB internal storage
  • A 108MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and two 10MP telephoto cameras
  • A 5,000 mAH battery with 45W fast charging

Samsung Galaxy Z Slide

When it comes to bold new devices, Samsung has been quietly working on rollable technologies that may revolutionise the way we interact with mobile phones. While we may not have access to a fully “rollable” device in the near future, developments in this space may help improve the functionality of other phones, such as foldable devices, and upcoming devices such as the rumoured Galaxy Z Slide, which Samsung recently patented in Germany.

Little is known about this phone but what we do know is that on the surface, it looks like a regular phone until the phone slides out the extra display real estate, turning it from a mobile phone into a small tablet. While folding phones have been promising this sort of experience, and recent developments have delivered a much better offer, this new design may see a dramatic improvement that finally bridges the gap between smartphones and tablets. Competitor Oppo recently demonstrated this technology with their Oppo X 2021 prototype, and if Samsung can also bring a similar device to the table, the future of this type of mobile device looks very, very promising.

Apple iPhone 14

A woman sits at a wooden table using a smartphone.

Another year means, of course, another iPhone. While this may not have everyone equally excited, die-hard Apple fans are undoubtedly interested to find out what the tech company has in store for the next iteration of the once-revolutionary phone.

It’s likely that features that have become standard in high-end Android smartphones, such as punch hole cameras, under-display selfie cameras, and high refresh rate screens (which were included for the first time in the recently released iPhone 13), will probably make an appearance. Speaking of appearance, many are speculating a return of the flush rear, where the cameras are a seamless part of the phone’s body. Apart from these upgrades, we can likely expect the usual bump up in camera specs, as well as speeds, particularly now that Apple is using their own Bionic chips in their devices.

Another welcome change (or unwelcome change if you’re Apple) is the proposed EU legislation that aims to standardise charging systems across devices so that a single common charger can be used, helping cut down on e-waste. This will force the iPhone to adopt USB-C and leave behind its proprietary lightning connector in the EU.

This may be costly and frustrating to Apple, but the positive effect this will have will undoubtedly be beneficial to consumers — who’ll be able to charge their device using any USB-C connector — and help save the environment, as a single charging standard would mean fewer charging devices overall. While this may not make an impact on the iPhone 14, it’s possible that Apple will have to adopt USB-C in their upcoming devices in the near future.

Foldable iPhone

The internet is awash with rumours that Apple will be throwing their hat into the ring with other foldable device manufacturers in 2022 or 2023. This entry into the folding device arena, rumoured to be called the iPhone Flip, doesn’t go as far as to turn the iPhone into a small tablet but rather uses the latest foldable technology to bring us a clam-style phone, much like the clamshell designs of the pre-smartphone era.

There is much speculation about the specifications of the device, with some tech sites sharing that it might have a screen that is as large as eight inches, which would put it into iPad Mini territory, and that it could even feature the latest M1 processors that Apple designed for their Mac range of computers. The only thing we know for certain at this point is that Apple might be considering a shift away from its traditional iPhone design, which will likely excite Apple fans who’ve been looking for a phone that’s a little different but still has the reputation and quality of an Apple product.

Google Pixel Fold

Google isn’t just going to let Samsung and Apple hog the spotlight, and reports are appearing online that the search engine powerhouse will be adding a folding phone to their range of Pixel devices. Considering that early builds of Android 12.1 have reintroduced dedicated support for a larger screen interface (something that may surprise many Android tablet users), it’s not unreasonable to think that Google will be adding a folding device to their lineup in late 2021 or early 2022.

Apart from being a foldable phone, we can expect it to pack the latest processors — whether that’s Qualcomm’s Snapdragon range or Google’s yet-to-be-released Tensor chips remains to be seen —as well as better cameras and the usual annual hardware improvements.

New phones and their impact on online mobile games

A man plays a game on his mobile phone.

These devices are undoubtedly something to get excited about if you’re a mobile gamer, but what will their impact be on people who like to play the best online slots or other mobile games? When it comes to higher spec smartphones, we’re unlikely to see much of a shift in the way games are played, apart from the usual improvements in graphics and sound.

However, foldables and sliding designs that allow for greater display space are likely to offer some “tangible” benefits over traditional smartphones. This doesn’t only potentially include larger and better visuals but also the option to improve user interfaces as game designers will have more room to work with. New mobile casinos, as well as existing online gambling spaces and other mobile game developers, may have to think ahead to ensure their technology allows for this flexible visual space so that consumers get the full benefits of their devices.
