Play Blackjack Online

Have you never played before? Are you a little rusty? Now is an excellent time to practise online Blackjack.

Blackjack can be played using one to eight 52-card decks. Aces are worth 1 or 11 points, 2 to 9 points based on pip value, and tens and face cards are worth 10 points. A hand's value is the sum of the point values of the individual cards. Except that a 'blackjack' hand, which consists of an ace and any 10-point card, outranks all other 21-point hands.

How to Play Blackjack

So, now that we've covered the fundamentals, let's dig a little deeper:

After the players have placed their bets, the dealer will deal two cards to each of them and two cards to himself. Face up, one of the dealer cards is dealt. The facedown card is referred to as the 'hole card.'  If the dealer holds an ace on the table, he will offer a side bet known as 'insurance.' If the dealer's hole card is any 10-point card, this side wager pays 2 to 1. Insurance bets are optional and may not exceed half of the original bet.If the dealer has a ten or an ace on the table (after selling insurance with an ace on the table), he will look at his facedown card to determine if he has a blackjack. If he does, he will instantly turn it over.

What will happen if...

If the dealer has a blackjack, all bets (excluding insurance) are lost, unless the player also has a blackjack, in which case the bet is a push. Insurance bets will be settled by the dealer at this time. The player on the dealer's left initiates play. The following options are accessible to the player: Stand: The player maintains his position with his cards. Hit: The player draws another card (and possibly more if he so desires). If the player's total points reach 21 (known as 'breaking' or 'busting'), he loses. Double: The player doubles his bet and receives only one extra card.

If the player has a pair or any two 10-point cards, he may double his wager and divide his cards into two new hands. The dealer will automatically deal a second card to each card. The player can then hit, stand, or double normally. When splitting aces, each ace receives only one card. It is not always possible to double after splitting. If the player receives a ten and an ace after splitting, it counts as 21 points rather than a blackjack. In most cases, the player may re-split up to four hands. Re-splitting aces is not always permitted.

Surrender: The player does not play out his hand and forfeits half of his bet while keeping the other half. Only the first two cards are available for this option, and depending on the casino's restrictions, it may not even be permitted in some cases.

The dealer will reveal his hole card after each player has had a turn. The dealer will draw another card if his hand total is 16 or less. When the dealer holds an ace plus any number of cards totalling six points, this is referred to as a 'soft 17' and is a rare circumstance. The dealer may also hit a soft 17 at some tables.

Any player who hasn't already busted will win if the dealer goes over 21 points.

The player or dealer with the higher point total will win if the dealer does not bust.

All winning bets pay even money, with the exception of blackjack, which typically pays 3 to 2.
