Which side will you be on?
We’re all familiar with the classic casino card games. Poker, blackjack, baccarat, bridge – these are some of the most popular (and iconic) gambling games in the world, with millions of players both online and off.
Casino War is commonly referred to as one of the most easily understood casino card games, Casino War is both a great introduction to the world of gambling for novices, and a quick-fire form of entertainment for experienced gamblers.
If you’ve ever despaired over the complex rules of bridge or baccarat, Casino War could well be the game for you! Its famously simple rules make it a great choice for beginners, as well as more experienced players hoping to make a quick win. Let’s take a look at how the game is played:
Casino War is played using six 52-card decks. Just as in poker, the aces are considered the highest-ranking cards in Casino War.
The game requires a minimum of 2 players and a maximum of 8.
The players and the dealer are each dealt one card. The game-play is centred around one simple wager – is the player’s card higher or lower than the dealer’s card?
The player wins the bet if their card is higher than the dealer’s, and the dealer wins if their card is higher than the player’s.
If the cards are equal in value, that means it’s a tie. When a tie occurs, the player is faced with two choices – they can either surrender, in which case they will lose their original wager, or they can go to war. This is where the game gets its name!
If the player chooses to go to war, they must place a bet which is equal to their original wager. The player and dealer are both then dealt an additional card.
If the player’s additional card is equal to or higher than the dealer’s additional card, they win the wager. If it’s lower, then the house wins.
Players also have the chance to bet on the outcome of ties. If the player places money on the tie and their card matches that of the dealer, they win their original bet at a tantalising rate of 10 to 1.
Why is Casino War so popular?
Casino War is so popular because its simple rules provide a very low barrier to entry. It requires very little (to no) skill but has the potential for players to win big. With six decks, both the dealer and player have a 46.3% chance of winning on the first card – making it an attractively ‘even money’ game when fears surrounding rigged algorithms and sky-high house edges abound.

Casino war pits you against a house dealer but the objective of the game remains the same: hope your card is higher than theirs. That’s really all there is to it. While the sight of a casino war table in a brick and mortar casino usually sets the scene for some carefree gambling, the game has made a successful transition to the online casino industry. Today casino war holds its own alongside competing table games across most prominent online casino venues.
Because casino war offers a relatively low house edge, along with a game that requires very little mental gymnastics from the player. People love to pass the time with a few hands of this age old classic. And after all, there aren’t many card game situations more exciting than the revelation of matching cards, prompting you and your opponent to declare war before letting the deck decide your fate.
Playing a hand of casino war is simple and stress-free, making it a favorite for newcomers trying to get a little gamble in during their first trip to the casino. To begin, you’ll place a mandatory ante bet in any amount you prefer.
After you ante up the dealer will toss out one card to each player at the table (or just you during online play), before dealing themselves a single card as well. All cards are dealt face up.
In casino war, standard hand rankings are applied. Aces are always high and suits are irrelevant. With the cards dealt out, the dealer compares each player card to their own, and the highest card wins. Winning bets are paid out at 1-to-1 while losing bets are claimed by the house.
The excitement of casino war comes when your card happens to tie the dealer’s card. When this scenario occurs, players are given the option to surrender and forfeit half of their ante bet, or to declare war by placing an additional wager equal to the ante. You won’t receive additional information to tilt your decision one way or another, so there are no strategic implications at play, and most players simply go to war and hope for the best. And besides, why play casino war if you’re not prepared to do battle?
When war is declared and the additional bet is placed, the dealer will burn three cards face down before delivering the player a second card face up. This process is repeated so that the dealer receives a second card, and these are compared to determine the winner.
A bet is placed only when it has been received by our server from your handset using our software. Once a bet has been placed it is final and binding and cannot be cancelled or changed. For the avoidance of doubt, a bet remains valid even if the result cannot for any reason be displayed back to your handset (due, for example, to a network failure, interruption of communication, or if you receive a phone call). In the event of a game termination, any relevant jackpot will be paid out on a random draw authorised by the regulator.
The theoretical average return to player (RTP) is up to 97.27%. This RTP represents the long-term expected payback of the game which has been calculated by an independent testing company and monitored monthly.
